Janette Sadik-Khan, the woman responsible for making New York’s streets pedestrian, bike, and business friendly, is giving a talk tonight, Thursday, March 18 2010, at Occidental College’s Keck Theater (1600 Campus Road, Los Angeles, CA 90041) at 7 p.m. – and we plan on being there!

Sadik-Khan is in town for the Street Summit 2010 – a series of workshops and panels being held this Saturday, March 20, 2010 at LA Trade Tech to make our streets more accessible and more friendly for everyone: cyclists, pedestrians, children, seniors, all Angelenos!

Join us at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065) at 6:30 p.m. and we can ride together to see what Sadik-Khan has to say. Ride departs the shop at 6:45 p.m.

We’ve followed Sadik-Khan’s (or JSK, as she is referred to on Streetsblog in New York) tenure as head of the New York Department of Transportation over the past couple of years, envious of New York’s transformation, hoping that Los Angeles could some day surpass what New York has done.

If you’re not a Streetblog junkie (which we understand), here is some more background information on “JSK”:

In New York City, Commissioner Sadik-Kahn has overseen an unprecedented transformation of streets. After generations of auto-centric transportation planning, New York City streets are being re-purposed to move and connect people over cars. Sadik-Khan has implemented numerous popular and innovative projects–from the pedestrianization of Times Square to the construction of over 200 miles of bike facilities in just 2 years–all of which are redefining streets as public places for people to utilize and inhabit in better ways. Her success has gained her world wide notoriety and she will be speaking at the 2010 StreetSummit to ellaborate on her efforts.

By the way, Cleveland and Pittsburgh both have those billboards of the guy with his arms out. The one in Cleveland is near the Indians stadium
