Fixing North Figueroa Street meeting on Friday, August, 19, 2011

North Figueroa before it was North Figueroa. From the USC Digital Archives.

Bikeways running the length of North Figueroa Street? So it is written in the LA Bike Plan, which passed through City Council in March of 2011.

What does a bikeway mean for those of us living and working along North Figueroa Street in the communities of Cypress Park, Mount Washington, Montecito Heights, Highland Park, Garvanza, and Eagle Rock? We think now is a great time re-think North Figueroa Street.

Come down to the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065) on Friday, August 19, 2011 from 7pm to 10pm (if it goes that late) to look at existing plans for the street, brainstorm ideas, come up with a task force or working group name, eat some food and talk about how to use this bikeway project to turn North Figueroa Street into the boulevard we deserve!

Is a stripe of paint for a bikeway enough for us, or would we like to see better crossing points for pedestrians, faster bus service, quiet streets with less crashes, and a healthier street for business?

Construction has already started down at the southern tip of N. Figueroa – a big bike bridge to connect the LA River Path to the intersection of Avenue 20 and N. Figueroa. Our area has been studied by numerous agencies and academics – and the negative results of fast car traffic on our old street-car and pedestrian friendly streets is written on vacant storefronts, frayed nerves, shattered cars, bodies, and property. It is time to shift the focus on North Figueroa Street.

Now is a fine time to begin organizing ourselves to make sure that we are ready for the LADOT and City Planning Department when the North Figueroa Street Bikeway gets introduced in City Hall later this year.

Join us this coming Friday, August 19, 2011 at 7pm at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065). We are a block away from the Heritage Square Gold Line station and are next to the intersection of N. Figueroa and Marmion/Pasadena if you are taking the Metro 81 or 83 bus lines. Exit Avenue 43 off the 110 if you’re driving. Parking available on street.

Food will be served – vegan and vegetarian friendly for sure!

DAG! I have a commitment to be at my daughter’s Pre-School “Camp Out” just a few blocks up FIGUEROA at that very same hour. Thanks for organizing this. It would be great to stop dreaming and hearing promises of bike and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and start seeing it in our own communities.

(Point of correction: It’s the 83 Bus, not the 84 that stops near the shop. The 84 goes up Figueroa to Cypress, Glassell, and Eagle Rock. And the 83 follows the path of the “W” streetcar from York Blvd to Lincoln Heights and Downtown.)

Way to go, Josef. This is both awesome and just what is needed.
