Figueroa For All meeting on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 7 p.m.

Join us at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90065) this coming Friday, September 9, 2011 at 7 p.m. We’re going to convene another catered get-together, screen some short films from Streetsfilms, and talk about where to take our dreams of a better North Figueroa Street.

We brainstormed ideas for a group name at our first meeting and, based on approximately fifty votes (at the time of writing this post), it looks like “Figueroa For All” won the majority of votes, with “Our Figueroa/Nuestra Figueroa” coming a close second. We’ll spend some time deciding if we should do a run-off election for the top vote getters, or simply go with “Figueroa For All”.

At the last meeting, some form of protected, or buffered, bikeway was on a lot of people’s minds, as was a safe and less noisy street. There was also a lot of talk about better prospects for local merchants through easier pedestrian, transit, and bicycle access to local businesses.

Our common vision seemed to be steering itself towards a “complete street”, and away from North Figueroa’s current configuration as a “Secondary Highway, Class II” (i.e. a car-only thoroughfare).

There is a lot left to do! First, we have to all make sure that the food provided is consumed with something worthwhile to drink. Second, some short films from Streetsfilms will need to be watched – they are quick, inspiring, and educational. Finally, we’ll have to develop some small projects, a plan of action, and a rough schedule for our outreach efforts.

Since this is an un-funded grass roots thing, having fun is highly encouraged. Speaking freely is a must. Kids are welcome. The whole thing should be wrapped up by 9:30 or 10 p.m.

Join us this coming Friday, September 9, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90065). We are a block away from the Heritage Square Gold Line station and are next to the intersection of N. Figueroa and Marmion/Pasadena if you are taking the Metro 81 or 83 bus lines. Exit Avenue 43 off the 110 if you’re driving. Parking available on street.

Food will be served – vegan and vegetarian friendly for sure!
