Do you care about bikes in North East Los Angeles?

Join us at the upcoming 2010 Bike Plan scoping meeting this at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens located at 570 W. Ave. 26, Los Angeles, CA 90065.

There is a Facebook Event page for this meeting.

Way back in 2008, the City held a meeting for a bike plan that, at the time, had a big blank spot for North East Los Angeles. That is, they were going to ignore our community’s need for bike-friendly (and business-friendly!) streets.

The community showed up, in numbers, and let it be known that we needed some bike love. Since those dark days, a sea-change has occurred in the Department of Transportation under Jaime de la Vega, the Planning Department, and the Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

But the ‘hood still needs your bike-lane support! On Wednesday night the City Planning department is going to hold a meeting about the bike lanes it will place on our area streets – and this is our opportunity to say, “Take a car lane and give us a bike lane!” or “We need a road diet!”. This is our chance to, personally, request streets that serve residents, shoppers, businesses, bus system users, and bike riders.

What am I going to say? Something along these lines: “I hope that the city uses this bike plan to make these streets more productive and less costly. More property and sales tax revenue, less crashes and traffic related police work, and a healthier and happier population overall. We need to make sure that we get the most out of this investment in bike lanes for our neighborhood. Maintaining the prevailing car speeds on our thoroughfares hurts us. Nobody stops and shops when they are going 45 mph. It is dangerous to cross the street in our busiest shopping areas. Even though we have a collection of wealthy hillside residents, our business store-fronts in prominent locations in our communities are vacant. We need to build a resilient neighborhood – the car-only streets we’ve been saddled with aren’t helping.
