Crazy Structure Fire at Guanajuato Tires

This really has nothing to do with bikes, but this morning as I was boxing up a bunch of stuff to ship about a dozen gigantic fire trucks screamed past me in rush to get to something. Guanajuato Tires, located near the corner of Avenue 40 and North Figueroa Street in Highland Park (just a few blocks from the shop) went up in smoke.

The chisme is that something shorted out and set off a couple of barrels of oil.

A dog got rescued (sorry, didn’t catch that on my cameras), according to neighborhood gossip.

When our shop was located in Highland Park proper, something like this would happen at least once a week. I can still recall the bomb squad ordering me to stay in the building while they closed off the street and sent a robot to blow up a bag of trash by the bus stop. Never a dull moment!

Bummer. I was just about to head over there to get some new tires. These are the guys that patched the Flying Pigeon Truck tires a few months back when they were sabotaged.

Despite their horrific yelp reviews, I found them to be a classic and honorable Llanteria where you can get used tires installed for $25 bucks, tire repairs done for $15 including labor and where a 6 pack of beer went a long way to building some goodwill.
