Flying Pigeon LA supports livable streets, adds BikeSideLA

First night at the Bike Oven

Our shop is co-owned by Josef Bray-Ali, founder of the Bike Oven, so we’ve never shied away from city hall meetings and advocating for more livable streets in our community and the City of Los Angeles as a whole.

However, owning and running a bike shop is more than a full time job, so instead of spending the copious amounts of time he used to working on bike advocacy issues, we decided to donate a chunk of money to organizations that are making a difference in LA’s streets instead.

This past year, we became LA Streetsblog‘s first “advertiser” – pledging several thousand annually to support their coverage of livable streets news in LA and beyond.

We are also supporters of CicLAvia, giving hundreds to fund the effort and trying our darndest to spread the word about the event, provide rental bikes for participants, and generally promote the idea of streets as a place to come together as Angelenos.

The Flying Pigeon LA bike shop is going to continue our support of LA Streetsblog and CicLAvia in 2011 – and we’re going to add one more to that list: BikesideLA.

BikesideLA is a 501(c)4 organization founded by BikeRoWave co-founder Alex Thompson. It is staffed by a hard working crew of volunteers that have been instrumental in helping push through some of the more controversial, and game changing, plans to make LA more bike friendly.

There are many other organizations in LA working hard to make LA a more livable place: CICLE.org, LACBC, Bike Kitchen, Bike Oven, BikeRoWave, Valley Bikery, Long Beach’s Hub, to name a few.

Our shop is built around beautiful bikes for everyday riding – but we all deserve a beautiful city to ride in! Flying Pigeon LA supports those at the forefront of making that happen.

In all honesty, if every bike shop realized that what’s good for bike advocates is good for them too, all of our bike orgs wouldn’t be scraping by. Thanks for all you do for LASB and beyond, Josef and Flying Pigeon.
