Ride bikes in the 2013 NELA Holiday Parade!

Aktive and Chicken Leather in the 67th NELA Holiday Parade

The 2013 NELA Holiday Parade is slated to take place on Sunday, December 1, 2013 and plans are afoot to prepare the largest, most coordinated, bike-group entry in NELA history. We want to show ourselves what we can do, with bikes, in a parade.

The combined efforts of the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, the East Side Bike Club, the Bike Oven, and parents, kids, and friends from area schools and the general neighborhood are planning a huge, themed, clump of bike riders of all ages and abilities in an effort to show cycling solidarity, show support for bike projects in the community, and to simply have fun on wheels

We’re holding parade planning meetings this month to get acquainted, get coordinated, and get prepped.

The first kid friendly party is coming up on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop (located at 3404 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065; adjacent the Cypress/Figueroa 81 & 83bus stop and equidistant from the Heritage Square and Cypress Park Gold Line Station stops; free street parking available).

What are we going to do at this meeting? Eat, meet, and figure out the details of our theme: colored outfits, silly hats, banners, signs, who will contact what schools & groups to get people informed and invited. We need to figure out a good hashtag, maybe #yoloNELAbikes? Cargo bike rides for bored kids will be happening until it’s close to bed-time.

Things you can bring bring: yourself, your family, food (it’s a potluck!), cheap & workable ideas, your network of friends, and your skillz. A musical instrument to play later in the evening might be fun (there is a piano in the shop for after the “meeting” part is done).

And hey! Check this out: a Facebook event for this planning party.

The 2nd and final meeting (before the day of the parade) will happen at a time and location TBD and is going to be all about decoration preparation: making the stuff we’re planning to make, adding to our contact list(s), typing up press releases, sewing, screen printing, etc. and eating and socializing in the presence of kids and adults.

Have an account with the NSA’s social map app (aka Facebook)? Awesome! There is a Facebook group for this parade entry: NELA #bikela Holiday Parade 2013
