Pershing Square Discovery Bike Ride on Sunday, June 27, 2010

Though we sometimes mock the noble beach cruiser, we cannot ignore it's symbolic power. Behold!

On Sunday, June 27, 2010 the City Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Pershing Square will hold it’s second annual free Pershing Square Discovery Bike Ride. Flying Pigeon LA bike shop will be there to show off some of our bikes and to lend a hand with a wrench if need be.

The goal of the Pershing Square Discovery Ride is to introduce the community to some unique methods of urban transportation and visit many of the interesting land marks in Downtown L.A.

When we heard about the first Discovery Ride last year, we were disappointed to have missed it. The goal of this event is quite admirable for a city like Los Angeles, which has only recently begun taking bicycles seriously as a mode of transport and local business promotion.

The ride will take place on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Pershing Square Outdoor Concert and Event Center located at 532 South Olive, Los Angeles, 90013 at 8:30 a.m. The ride will leave at 9:30 a.m. and will take an 18-mile route through the area, ending where it starts back at Pershing Square.

The official web-site for the ride provides no directions using surface streets (for those of us biking to the start) and no transit directions (there is a massive Metro Red Line station at Pershing Square and multiple bus lines serving Pershing Square from both LADOT and MTA), but this is LA and at least we’ve gotten a ride put together with government backing!
