The Great Measure R Debate was a resounding success. Two very bright speakers battled it out for our votes on a 1/2 cent sales tax increase for the MTA on this November. After watching these two gentlemen square off on this issue, I have a feeling voters will be able to make more informed decision after watching this 58 minute long debate.
This short debate was certainly more civil than the recent cat fight over Measure R between Supervisor Gloria Molina and Supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky, which took place in an MTA board meeting. It was also more personal and informative than the many op-ed pieces penned in numerous local and regional papers in support or opposed to Measure R.
Flying Pigeon LA is hosting the Get Sum Dim Sum Ride again this Sunday, November 2, 2008. This week, we’re heading out to the 626 area code to get some dim sum at King Hua in Alhambra.
Meet us on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at 10 a.m. (ride leaves at 10:30 a.m.) at 5711 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90042. We roll at 10:30 a.m.
The Great Measure R Sales Tax Debate and Movie Screening will take place on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop located at 5711 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90042. We at Flying Pigeon LA believe that a free society is made stronger by an ol’ fashioned debate (and bicycles too!), so we’re hosting one in our shop to help voters decide whether Measure R is worth the 1/2 cent sales tax increase. After the debate, we’ll be screening a funny and touching movie from China called “Please Vote For Me” about a classroom election in a Chinese elementary school (communists teaching kids about democracy = awesome!).
A friend of ours (a little birdy you might say) mentioned that eBay is offering an amazing deal right now with a 30% discount for any purchase made on their site with a “Buy It Now” auction that is paid for with Paypal services. Noting the limitations (max discount per item is $200, must pay with Paypal, etc) we immediately thought that this was something our customers could really take advantage of!
A gigantic tree in front of the Flying Pigeon LA shop died a while ago, and the City finally sent a crew to cut it down. The crew came in the middle of the night, and when they were done the tree was gone (to match a stump twenty yards up the block) and an insulting “LADOT” cone as nailed into the top of the remaining stump.
A small crew of Guerilla Gardeners showed up and planted some small flowering plants around the stump, and planted their flag (two small logos on sticks, really) in the fresh potting oil they laid down.

LA.com sent one of their finest to file a report on our Dim Sum Rides recently. You can read the report, penned by Sumyi Khong, in her article “Flying Pigeon’s ‘Get Sum Dim Sum’ Weekly Bike Ride”.

This past Get Sum Dim Sum Ride was a blast! We decided to skip the dim sum, and head over to the San Antonio Winery for brunch, a tour, and a wine tasting. We had a ton of web-savvy riders this past week: blkmarket took photos; so did sha in L.A. (who also wrote a post about the ride); we got covered by Eating L.A.; and, Johnny Lam covered the ride on his blog memoryloot.
